Bisexual Awareness Week

0

Bisexual Awareness Week is Sept 23rd – 30th 2018!

Bisexual Awareness Week exists to accelerate acceptance for the bi community. #BiWeek celebrates the resiliency of bisexual culture and community. Throughout #BiWeek, allies and bi people learn about the history, culture, community and current policy priorities of bi communities. It kicks off with Bi Visibility Day on September 23.

Some people who are be attracted to people of any gender choose other words to describe their sexual orientation, such as bisexual, pansexual, polysexual, omnisexual, fluid, or queer. Some people prefer to avoid any label at all. The Bi community sometimes faces a unique discrimination where they may not be accepted by the straight community, but also face challenges from the gay and lesbian communities. It can include things such as Bi erasure in the media, being told they are not welcome in queer spaces or that they are just gay and need to come out.

If anyone is dealing with discrimination it is important to remember that this is not your fault, and you deserve support.  Start by talking to someone you trust or check out the Rainbow Resource Centre. It’s a great place to get support for anyone who identifies as 2STLGBQ+. They offer free counselling, and tons of youth programs.

Bisexual Awareness Week is all about pushing back on this discrimination and celebrating Bi resiliency, culture and community.
