Manitoba Substance Use and Addictions Awareness Week

0

It’s Manitoba Substance Use and Addictions Awareness Week (M-SUAAW) is an opportunity for folks to engage in meaningful discussions and explore the impacts of substance use.

The theme for this year’s campaign, “Change Begins with Me”, acknowledges that we can all play a role in bringing about change. It also challenges us to look at our own values and attitudes towards people who use drugs (PWUD). When we create stigma, negative judgements of others, we only add to the risks experienced by PWUD. Instead, let’s shift our attitudes to one of caring and support. The reality is, lots of people use drugs or alcohol at some point in their life. It can be for fun, for the experience or for coping. For some people, their use may develop into problematic use where they struggle to stop or reduce their use and where relationships in their life become impacted.

It’s important that whether we don’t use at all, only use a little, or use a whole bunch, we all learn harm reduction techniques to keep each other safe. We also can call others including the media and the government to challenge current policies that block people from getting support and care for their health and well-being.

If you or someone you know is struggling with their mental health or with drugs and alcohol then it might be time to reach out for extra support. Check out some of the following resources:
