World Suicide Prevention Day

0

September 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD). It is about sending a message of love and support to those who are having thoughts of suicide, those who are grieving, and those who are supporting someone who is struggling. WSPD is an opportunity to spread the message that help, hope, and healing are possible. It lets someone know they are not alone.

This years theme is Working Together to Prevent Suicide. We all have a role to play in addressing the root causes that may lead to thoughts of suicide, and we all have to work together to advocate for better supports for mental health and substance use.

How can you take part?

  • Wear a suicide awareness ribbon. The beautiful orange and yellow ribbon represents a flame, a light in the darkness. It is a symbol of hope and possibility.
  • Spread the awareness of WSPD and share suicide prevention resources like Reason to Live and the Manitoba Suicide Prevention and Support Line 1-877-435-7170 across social media.
  • Light a candle and place it near a window at 8:00 p.m. on September 10th. The candle will be a beacon of caring and compassion, which illuminates the need for suicide awareness and prevention. The candle also recognizes those who have been impacted by suicide or bereaved by suicide.
  • Do something for yourself.  Having thoughts of suicide, grieving someone who has died by suicide or  supporting someone who is suicidal can feel very heavy. It’s important to take the time to do things that help you cope through hard times.
  • Check in with people around you. If you are concerned about someone, reach out and ask them if they want to talk. If you are having thoughts of suicide talk with someone you trust. Anyone who is thinking about suicide or worried about a friend who may be thinking about suicide can call the Manitoba Suicide Prevention and Support Line 1-877-435-7170. The number is free and there are trained counsellors who can help. You can also visit their website, Reason to Live.
