For a pregnancy to happen, a penis has entered a vagina and ejaculated semen (which contains sperm). Then the sperm has to travel up the vagina and uterus to fertilize an egg in the fallopian tubes. The fertilized egg then travels to the uterus, attaches to its wall and a pregnancy starts. For the full run-down on how pregnancy happens, check out the internal female bodies section.

Yes, there are some days in a woman’s cycle when pregnancy is more likely and some days when it is less likely. However, it is possible for someone to get pregnant any day of the month, even on their period.
This is possible because sperm can live inside a female body for up to seven days! That means someone having unprotected sex on their period could get pregnant if the sperm is still hanging around after their period ends. It is also possible for more than one egg to be released from the ovaries during someone’s cycle. That means if someone is on their period, a second egg could be released and there could be a chance of pregnancy (see internal female anatomy). And finally, it’s common for younger folks to have unpredictable periods from month to month, so there are no 100% “safe” days to have sex without a chance of pregnancy.
Also, people still have to think about STI protection when they are on their period. If people are having sex, then that means using a condom everytime.

There is no clear answer to this question because not all brands of birth control work the same. The instructions that come with the birth control pill pack are very detailed. They will explain what to do if you miss a pill, if you take a pill late, how the pill works, and what side effects may occur. It is always best to use the birth control pill with a condom. It will give you added protection in preventing pregnancy (especially if you have not taken a pill correctly), and will protect against sexually transmitted infections (the birth control pill offers no protection against STI).

Yes! As soon as a penis enters a vagina there is a risk of pregnancy because of the pre-ejaculate (pre-cum) at the tip of the penis. This fluid contains sperm and infection (if there is any). If a male has already started the process of ejaculating (cumming) then there is a good chance semen has been deposited in the vagina and therefore, pregnancy could occur. It is important to remember that STIs can be easily transmitted when genitals are rubbing against each other or when a penis enters a vagina or anus. If someone can take the time to try and pull out their penis before they ejaculate then they can take the time to put on a condom before they even have sex!

A splash pregnancy is when semen lands close to a vagina and sperm swims into the vagina, resulting in a pregnancy. If this were to happen, removing the semen by showering or washing it off in some other way would be the next thing to do. Removing the semen in this way would make it very unlikely that a pregnancy could happen. Of course anytime there is sperm near a vagina there is a risk of pregnancy, so we can’t say 100% that it wouldn’t happen, but it would reduce the risk a lot.
